Does DMSA (succimer) lower lead or improve cognition, autism, or arsenicosis?
In children with blood lead of 20 to 44 µg/dL, the TLC randomized trial found that succimer lowered blood lead and did not improve cognition, behavior, or neuropsychological scores. A Cochrane review of chelation for autism found only one randomized trial and no evidence of an effect on symptoms. One small randomized trial in chronic arsenicosis found no significant benefit versus placebo.
Studies
| Study | Design | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Rogan 2001 TLC | RCT, placebo, 780 children aged 12 to 33 months, blood lead 20 to 44 µg/dL | Lowered blood lead. No improvement in cognition, behavior, or neuropsychology at 36 months. Follow-up to age 7 also null. PMID 11346806. |
| Adams 2009 | Open first round, then randomized rounds, children with autism | Authors state the first round compromised the placebo comparison. PMID 19852789. |
| James 2015 Cochrane | Systematic review, 1 RCT included | No evidence that multiple rounds of oral DMSA affected autism symptoms. Authors: risks currently outweigh proven benefits. PMID 26114777. |
| Guha Mazumder 1998 | Double-blind RCT, 11 versus 10 adults with chronic arsenicosis | No significant clinical, biochemical, or histologic benefit versus placebo. PMID 9865236. |

The Heavy Metal Tested and Certified public register listed no licensees on 15 October 2026. That page reported 0 certified brands and 0 certified products, and it stated that no brand has completed the three-lot baseline. A specimen layout on the register is an illustration, not a licensee. This page does not name or rank any brand.
The program states that certification is a measurement of a product against a published limit, not a statement that the product is safe. If a licensee is later listed for this category, it will be on the register.
