Does deferoxamine reduce bone aluminum in dialysis patients?

In a case series, bone aluminum was absent or reduced in 3 dialysis patients who had a repeat biopsy after deferoxamine. A later randomized comparison of two doses, without placebo, found similar response rates at the low dose and the standard dose. These studies do not establish a population benefit beyond aluminum overload in dialysis.

Studies

  • Malluche 1984: uncontrolled series, 7 treated dialysis patients, repeat biopsy in 3. Bone aluminum absent or reduced in those 3. The serum-rise test was not diagnostic. PMID 6377067.
  • Kan 2010: 21 versus 21 hemodialysis patients with aluminum overload. Success in 13 of 21 on the low dose and 12 of 21 on the standard dose, P=0.75. No placebo. doi:10.1093/ndt/gfp649. PMID 19948879.

What's safe to buy

The Heavy Metal Tested and Certified public register listed no licensees on 15 October 2026. That page reported 0 certified brands and 0 certified products, and it stated that no brand has completed the three-lot baseline. A specimen layout on the register is an illustration, not a licensee. This page does not name or rank any brand.

The program states that certification is a measurement of a product against a published limit, not a statement that the product is safe. If a licensee is later listed for this category, it will be on the register.
